Visiting Vala Gardena

In Val Gardena, Italy you will discover the beauty of the Dolomites. It is located in the northern part of the Dolomites and it is famous for its beautiful countryside.

The Roman Road

The main attraction of this village is the Roman Road which goes through the center of the village.

The Roman Road is a network of roads, railways, tunnels, and fortifications (some still in place) that connected various parts of what was then known as the Roman Empire.

For much of its history, this road was a crucial part of the way people and goods got from one area to another, as it linked different ancient townships together, providing access to sea ports and the crossing of rivers.

The system also meant that people traveling between these areas could not only travel by foot but could also use other means of transport such as animals pulling carts, or even oxen.

It was the Roman military that actually developed the roads and railways that separated the various provinces of the Roman Empire. Today, the most famous section of this road was the Ring to the north, known as the Tiber; though other sections existed all the way around the Italian Peninsula.

On this road, you will find the Roman Baths that can be seen at almost level terrain.

There are many beautiful tombs in this area. At this point the slope gradually towards the sea. It is possible to walk along the path of the Roman Road and you will see many magnificent monuments such as the House of Holiness, Palazzo Reale, the Temple of Janiculum, the Temple of Isis, Pincio di Monti and the Roman Theatre.

Piazza Castello

Piazza Castello has a long history. In fact it was built during the Renaissance, when the city was being developed by the wealthy. The street is lined today with many fine shops and restaurants. This famous street is also lined today with a large number of bars, nightclubs and restaurants.

The Piazza Castello has three sections, the northern part is the commercial/shop section, the middle is the plaza section and the southern part is the square.

The most popular Piazza Castello tourist attractions are the Palazzo Reale, the Piazza Castello Museum, the House of Francesco Lippi and the Uffizi Museum. Amongst these the piazza is perhaps the best known for its fountain of water that can be seen from all over the city.

Some of the best places to visit in and around the Piazza Castello are the Piazza Castello Museum, the Uffizi Museum, the Palazzo Madama and the House of Francesco Lippi.

There is also a parking space for visitors in the underground car park. The last two are open to the public although the fountain of water is closed on Wednesdays.
